Susan Williams-Ellis opened a gift shop in the Village of Portmeirion in Wales during the nineteen sixties and began selling pottery that she had designed herself to compliment the village. With her reputation for originality, her tableware soon became collectable, leading to the acquisition of two small pottery companies. In nineteen seventy two she designed the Portmeirion Botanic Garden set which soon became a worldwide best seller. Sophie Conran has also designed the collection Sophie Conran for Portmeirion which is ideal for contemporary living.
