Susan Williams-Ellis opened a gift shop in the Italianate Village of Portmeirion in Wales during the 1960’s and began selling china that she had designed herself to compliment the village. With her reputation for originality, her china soon became collectable, leading to the acquisition of two small pottery firms in Stoke-on-Trent in the early 1960’s. In 1972 she designed Botanic Garden china, which soon became a world wide best seller. Portmeirion regularly produces new china patterns, some of which are now designed by Susan’s daughters.

The Botanic Garden china design is based on antique botanical illustrations and consists of tableware, cookware and a stunning new range of hand-painted crystal glassware. The Pomona tableware collection, named after the goddess of fruit, features eight individual fruit motifs re-created from nineteenth century illustration plates.

The new range of Portmeirion Botanic Roses china features six stunning, painterly rose motifs, evoking memories of hazy English summer afternoons. A must for rose enthusiasts, all the new motifs are based on actual flowers including the David Austin Fine English Portmeirion Rose, which was launched to celebrate the work of the founder of Portmeirion Potteries, and creator of the original Botanic Garden, Susan Williams-Ellis.
